Day 6: Skye to Ullapool via Applecross (110 miles, 4 hours with stops)
Leave Skye and drive south, then east through Kyle of Lochalsh and along the northern shore of Loch Carron. The highlight of the day is crossing the Bealach na Bà—”the pass of the cattle”—one of the UK’s highest and most dramatic roads. This single-track mountain pass climbs to 626m with steep gradients and no barriers on some sections. Only attempt it in good weather and with a confident driver. Descend into Applecross, where you can refuel at the famous Applecross Inn. Continue to Ullapool, a charming fishing village on the shores of Loch Broom. Overnight with views of the Summer Isles.

Day 7: Ullapool to Inverness (120 miles, 2.5 hours)
Drive southeast on the A835 and A9 through Dingwall and into Inverness, the capital of the Highlands. En route, stop at Culloden Battlefield, the site of the 1746 Jacobite defeat, and visit the modern visitor centre. Arrive in Inverness for a final lunch by the River Ness, explore Inverness Castle, or take a short cruise on Loch Ness. From here, you can fly home from Inverness Airport or continue south to Edinburgh or Glasgow.

Practical Tips for 2024

  • Vehicle: A compact SUV or estate car is ideal. Many now opt for electric vehicles—rapid chargers are available in Fort William, Inverness, and Ullapool.
  • Booking: Popular hotels and restaurants fill quickly in summer. Reserve ahead, especially on Skye and in Fort William.
  • Weather: Always pack layers, waterproofs, and sturdy boots. Highland weather changes fast.
  • Etiquette: Respect the Scottish Outdoor Access Code—leave no trace, close gates, and park responsibly.

In 2024, this Highland road trip isn’t just a drive—it’s a journey through history, nature, and personal challenge. For the modern British man, it’s the ultimate blend of freedom, adventure, and awe.
